While a major battle never occurred in Newport, the town was heavily occupied by the British and hosted French troops during the Revolutionary War. Most of Newport’s patriotic residents fled the island for other parts of Rhode Island to avoid the occupation. General Rochambeau was even stationed here for a portion of the war where he met with General George Washington.
