Nicholson, a self-taught painter, immigrated to Newport from Scotland and worked as a master joiner on several summer cottages. This image of Newport Harbor beautifully illustrates a typical day in Newport's working waterfront of in the late 1800's, including the Eolus, a steamship which brought thousands of visitors to this city on the sea.
