Herman Hermit Crab
In 1883 a gathering of physicians, scientists, inventors, and writers from Boston, New York and Philadelphia established the Newport Natural History Society to study and collect specimens relating to botany, geology and zoology of Aquidneck Island. The Society likely studied the many species that live in the Narragansett Bay surrounding the island, including the hermit crab. The Newport Natural History Society eventually merged with the Newport Historical Society, who holds the Society’s records in its collection.
