Beach Scene Colored Pencils
Set of 24 colored pencils with sharpener in tin case. Case adorned with image of Felix Augustus Peckham's watercolor on paper of Easton's Beach in Newport, Rhode Island.
This watercolor beautifully captures summer at Easton's Beach before Bellevue Avenue and Ocean Drive became the center of seasonal activities in Newport. Horse drawn carriages traveled down "Bath Road" from the city to the sea and came right onto the beach to discharge passengers. Men could enjoy the beach dressed much as they do today, but women had to enter the sea in full bathing dresses. A hint of the bathhouses constructed to facilitate the trend of "bathing" can be seen at the far right.
