In 1883 a gathering of physicians, scientists, inventors and writers from Boston, New York and Philadelphia established the Newport Natural History Society to study and collect specimens relating to botany, geology and zoology of Aquidneck Island. The Society likely used tools like this pocket magnifier to study ecological finds in the field. The Newport Natural History Society eventually merged with the Newport Historical Society, who holds the Society’s records in its collection.
